<< SMAKEN VAN GEVOUWEN HERINNERINGEN >>

<< 春卷 ,捲半生 >>

This documentary theatre work blends contemporary approach with lived experience, created together with 14 ordinary Chinese seniors aged from 65-90 from Stichting Tien Yan Nederland — an organization providing day care services for elderly members of the Chinese community in the Netherlands. For the first time, they step onto the stage to share their untold stories — a healing and reflective journey through memory, identity, and emotion.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Chinese immigrants arrived in the Netherlands, followed by hundreds of thousands more in the decades that followed. Many of today’s Chinese seniors have lived through this long, complex journey. After a century of stereotypes and limited representation, they now speak for themselves — reclaiming their voices, histories, and presence.

Guided by theatre artists - Carmen Lee & Chun Shing Au from Theatre du Poulet and a vocal coach - Kris Ng, the seniors embark on a process of rediscovery — revisiting memories, exploring identity, and finding the courage to listen to their own inner voices.

This cross-generational collaboration brings together theatre, music, and film. The production features documentary short films, music videos, and three original songs inspired by the seniors’ stories — with the seniors themselves recording the vocals in a professional studio. Through this creative process, personal memories are transformed into collective expression.

Bold, tender, and deeply human, this performance paints a rare and intimate portrait of a generation of “silent” Chinese elders, breaking taboos and illuminating their resilience and wisdom through art.
